Retired Steelworker Challenging Numbers

From Staff And Wire Reports

A second Spokane resident has announced plans to challenge Bev Numbers for her seat on the Spokane City Council.

Retired steelworker Robert G. Schroeder, 61, says he plans “to bring honesty back to City Hall.

“Everybody’s ignoring the people. I intend to work with the people and get them their money’s worth.”

Schroeder listed his chief concerns as code enforcement and street maintenance.

Council seats held by Numbers, Joel Crosby and Orville Barnes are up for election this fall. So far, Numbers is the only one of the three to announce plans to run for re-election.

Outspoken Council critic Ken Withey last week announced plans to challenge Numbers.

Schroeder has twice run unsuccessfully for the Council. In 1993, he challenged former Councilman Jack Hebner, who later lost his seat to Councilman Chris Anderson. Schroeder also ran in the 1991 primary campaign for the seat eventually won by Orville Barnes.

He serves as a lay minister at St. John Vianney Catholic Church and has a motor delivery route for The Spokesman-Review.
