Mongolian Exhibit At Royal B.C. Museum

The final North American stop for a renowned exhibit of ancient Mongolian culture has opened at the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria.

“Empires Beyond the Great Wall: The Heritage of Genghis Khan” features 200 artifacts from Inner Mongolia, some more than 5,000 years old.

The artworks range from gold headdresses and necklaces to fine porcelain, bronze figurines and grotesque funeral paintings. Many of the artifacts are recent discoveries and have never before been seen outside China.

The show, described as the most significant archaeological exhibit since King Tut, runs through Sept. 10. Tickets are a bargain: $5 (Canadian), and can be obtained by mail or through TicketMaster outlets (206) 628-0888. More than 650,000 visitors are anticipated, so potential museum-goers are advised to buy tickets early.

Grand opening: The Skamania County Historical Society will open its new Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center in Stevenson, Wash., with a three-day grand opening celebration beginning May 17.
