Hendrickson Can’t Stop Zags Bulldogs Get Past Washington State

Troy Cleland and Lloyd Hounsell combined to hold Washington State to seven hits Wednesday as the Gonzaga Bulldogs roughed up the Cougars 4-1 in Pacific-10 Northern Division baseball play at Columbia Basin College Field in Pasco.

The Bulldogs jumped to a 2-1 lead with runs in the second and third innings. Cleland picked up the win, striking out five, while Hounsell picked up his third save of the year.

Washington State basketball star Mark Hendrickson, making his first conference start, took the loss, giving up four runs, eight hits and five walks while striking out five in seven innings.

Ryan Branch scored Gonzaga’s go-ahead run in the third inning after Hendrickson gave up a bases-loaded walk to Scott Morgan.

The Bulldogs (10-11 in Pac-10, 24-21 overall) pushed their lead to 3-1 in the sixth inning when Brendan Hare scored on a Cougars error after Branch reached base on an infield bunt.

Gonzaga’s final run came in the seventh inning, when Morgan singled to score Carter Masterson from second base.

WSU’s only run came in the third inning, when Mike Wetmore reached base on an error, stole second and came home on Rob Ryan’s single up the middle.

The Cougars (11-9, 21-24) had their chances in the first, fourth and sixth innings, but three double plays by Gonzaga snuffed those opportunities. In the first, WSU loaded the bases before Mike Kinkade grounded into a double play.

In the fourth inning, WSU had two runners on base with no outs, but Duane Stuart popped up to Cleland, who then caught Ty Solomon too far off second base.

In the sixth inning, Jim Horner grounded into a double play with no outs.
