Lake City Forges Split In Battle With Post Falls

Lake City and and Post Falls split an Inland Empire League doubleheader Thursday afternoon.

Host Lake City won the opener 4-1 as Ryan Scharnhorst pitched a three-hitter, striking out five.

Luke Anderson and Travis Whiteside each had RBI doubles for the team, which scored three runs in the third inning.

Post Falls rebounded with a vengeance, winning 15-5 by breaking open a close game with a fourrun fourth inning, including James Ownby’s three-run homer.

Winning pitcher Brad Medlock struck out nine and had three hits.

Soccer

Couer d’Alene improved to 3-4 in the North Idaho Soccer League and 5-7 overall with an 8-1 romp past Bonners Ferry (2-5).

Brett Fink scored the Vikings’ first three goals and Michael Diamond scored the final three as each recorded a hat trick for the winners.

In a non-league contest, visiting Sandpoint nipped West Valley of Spokane 2-1 on a score by Jason Campbell 13 minutes into the second half.

WV had 12 first-half shots, but the Bulldogs had a 1-1 tie when Campbell found Jeremy Fredricksen for the first goal.

Softball

Coeur d’Alene improved its Inland Empire League record to 5-3 and 9-5 overall with a 7-6, 3-0 doubleheader sweep over visiting Lewiston.

The Vikings scored six runs with two outs in the third inning and they held up for the first-game win.

Winning pitcher Kim Sigler had a two-run base hit in the second inning and struck out three.

Second-game pitcher Kelly Olson scattered six hits and walked only one during her shutout victory.

Coeur d’Alene scored on a wild pitch in the first inning and had two runs on only one hit in the third.

Frontier League track

For the third week in a row, East Valley of Spokane scored more than 100 points in a Frontier League track meet and co-coach Dave McCarty remains mystified with the ease of his team’s victories.

On Thursday, the Knights (3-0) manhandled rival West Valley (1-2) 102-43, the largest margin of victory in their 28-year history, setting up their title showdown next week in Clarkston (2-0-1).

In a showdown of the area’s best girls triple jumpers, WV’s Terra Inman edged Knight Star Olson, both with career bests, 35-8 1/2 to 35-4 1/2.

The two jump stars were part of a meet that saw the Eagles (3-0) edge closer to a fourth straight league championship with an 85-56 win over previously unbeaten EV.
