For A Whole Raft Of Fun, Take To The Rivers

Graham Vink Travel Editor

The snow is melting, the rivers are rising … and it’s just about time for whitewater rafting. Some ideas:

Coeur d’Alene adventure travel company ROW Inc. offers a variety of rafting trips on Northwest rivers, including the Salmon, the Snake, Owyhee, Selway and Clark Fork.

Trips for all skill levels are available (including kids and seniors), ranging in length from a day to a week; costs begin at $73 for day trips. Fishing and hiking tours are also available. For more information, call (800) 451-6034.

Warren River Expeditions, based in Salmon, Idaho, offers kayak and raft trips down the Main Salmon River, and also features packages geared to seniors and fishermen. Costs range from $200 for a one-day kayak workshop to $1,400 for a sevenday steelhead fishing trip. For information, call (800) 765-0421 or (208) 756-6387.

Accessible Alaska: A sightseeing tour company, Alaska Snail Trails, offers 10-day tours catering to the needs of people with impaired mobility.

Attractions, hotels, restaurants and the lift-equipped minicoach all meet guidelines established by the American with Disabilities Act. Itineraries for this summer give the choice of a Kenai-Denali tour or a Denali-Fairbanks tour. For information, call (800) 348-4532 or (907) 337-7517.

Short takes: Bits and pieces from around the Northwest:

Road crews are in the process of clearing snow from Going-to-theSun Road in Glacier National Park; many parts of it are now open to hikers and bicyclists, but not cars. For information, call the park at (406) 888-5441.

Next Saturday is the 75th annual Opening Day of Boating Season in Seattle, featuring hundreds of pleasure boats, yachts, tugs and other watercraft. Festivities take place in and around Montlake Cut, with the decorated boat parade beginning at noon. For information, call (206) 325-1000.

Whatcom wanderings: “Live from Bellingham,” a free brochure listing summer visual and performing arts events in the Northwest Washington city, can be ordered by calling the Bellingham/Whatcom County Convention and Visitors Bureau at (800) 487-2032.

Use the same number to order the bureau’s 1995 Festival and Events Calendar, a free publication featuring family events like the June 3 Farmers’ Day Parade, the Old Settlers Pioneer Days Picnic in July and many others. For other visitplanning information, call the staff at (360) 671-3990.
