Jim Hill Festival Begins Tomorrow

Tom Sowa Staff Writer

That big rumble of fun from the northeast part of town this weekend will be the annual three-day Jim Hill Hillyard Festival.

The festival starts Friday with an open golf tournament at Esmeralda Golf Course, followed by a dinner at Harmon Park. Several City Council members are expected to attend.

On Saturday, things get wild. There is all-day bingo, a display of antique cars and the annual Hillyard Jim Hill Parade, which starts at 10 a.m.

“Every year we make it a little bigger and better,” said Hillyard Festival Association President Diane Smith.

“We get a little more involvement from the community each year. It’s going to be a lot of fun,” she said.

Sunday’s activities close out the weekend. The live music in Harmon Park starts at noon and continues until 4 p.m.

For families, Smith recommends visits to the Hillyard Heritage Fire and Rail Museum at Market and Queen.

“They’ll have their usual displays, but also they’ll give some previews of other displays they expect to develop in the future,” she said.

The museum offers collections of history and folklore about the people and companies that helped build Hillyard.

The community, which was a separate city until it was annexed by Spokane in 1924, dates back more than 100 years. Hillyard once was a major rail center and is named for Great Northern Railway founder James Hill.
