Chemistry Teachers Receive Partners In Science Award
George LeBret, a chemistry teacher at Central Valley High School, and David Cleary, assistant professor of chemistry at Gonzaga University, recently received a $14,000 Partners in Science Award from Research Corp. The program allows high school science teachers to participate in college and university research under the guidance of faculty scientists. The research by LeBret and Cleary will focus on investigating new nonlinear-optical crystals.
Obie Media Corp. received the Outdoor-Bulletin Award of Excellence for its entry “Listen to Rush - More.” The client was 1510 KGA Radio in Spokane.
Leeann Reeves, a Spokane teacher, and Alison Olzendam, principal at Glover Middle School, were awarded scholarships by the Rachel Royston Permanent Scholarship Foundation of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.
Reeves is seeking a doctor of philosophy degree in educational leadership at Gonzaga University. Olzendam is seeking the same degree and completing her superintendent credentials at GU.
Nick Weber was selected to attend the 1995 Missoula Children’s Theatre Performing Arts Camp as well as winning a $500 scholarship from Spokane Children’s Theatre. He will be a senior at University High School in the fall.
Women of the Water Power Foundation recently awarded several scholarships. The recipients, their scholarships and the schools they will attend are:
Shannon Martensen, $1,800, Washington State University.
Melinda Young, $1,500, Brigham Young University.
Stephanie Palmer, $1,000, Spokane Falls Community College.
Jeffrey Scott, $700, Spokane Falls Community College.
Jenni Meyer was recently elected president of the foundation. Other officers are Karen Groce, vice president; Linda Brandon, secretary; Helen Eldenburg, treasurer; and Char Thomas and Marie Yates, board members.
Michael Podobnik attended the National Youth Ambassadors Forum on Tobacco Issues in Washington, D.C. He won a letterwriting contest to Rep. George Nethercutt about how to prevent kids from smoking. His letter proposed a law that would make it illegal for minors to use tobacco products, not just buy them. In the fall, he will be an eighth-grade student at Chase Middle School.
Mark Sullivan, son of Thomas and Sally Sullivan, was Lewis and Clark High School’s delegate to the sixth annual Engineering State at Utah State University in Logan. He received a $350 scholarship for the university-credit program. He is a member of the National Honor Society, bridge club and math team and has received a letter in orchestra.
Desira Johnson, a Spokane Community College liberal arts student, received the Freshman Chemistry Achievement Award from the Chemical Rubber Co. She also received a copy of the Chemistry Handbook, regarded as the definitive reference manual in chemistry.
Barry Curry, owner of Thrifty Car Rental stores in Spokane and Coeur d’Alene, was named one of the top 20 U.S. performers within car rental franchise system. He earned a 10-day “Cradle of Civilization” trip to Greece and Turkey. He has been affiliated with Thrifty since 1978.
