Winners Announced In Wallace Chili Cook-Off
Cooks from as far away as California and Illinois trekked to Wallace recently to compete in the Idaho State Championship Chili and Barbecue Cook-Off.
Winning the chili division were:
J.R. Knudsen, Granite Bay, Calif., first place, $500 and a trophy for “J.R. Rough and Ready Chili”; Dennis Bortko, Edwardsville, Ill., second place, $100 and a trophy for “Chili-King Rated X”; Marilee Barrett, Blue Jay, Calif., third place, $50 and a trophy for “High Country Chili Too.”
Myra Franks, Coeur d’Alene, won the People’s Choice, $75 and a trophy for “Mexican Food Factory.”
Barbecue Cook-Off Winners:
Derek Maida and Dave Annon, Bellevue, Wash., Grand Champion, $500 and a trophy for “Beaver Castors”; Lynne Brokaw, Seattle, $100 and a trophy for “Evergreen Red,” tied for Reserve Champion with Harold Froescher, West Linn, Ore., $100 and a trophy for “The Dakota Kid”; Brian Koba, Seattle, People’s Choice, $75 and a trophy for “Sumsay American Foods Inc.”
First-Place Barbecue Winners:
A trophy and $25 went to Ben Plaza, Fruitland, Idaho for “Bitabasco Barbecue” chicken; Derek Maida and Dave Annon for “Beaver Castors” lamb ribs and pork butt/shoulder; Lynne Brokaw for “Evergreen Red” pork ribs, and Harold Gable, Portland, for “Bit ‘o Hog Heaven” beef brisket.
Desiree Dawn McCollough, Bonners Ferry, recently earned a bachelor of science degree from Western Washington University in Bellingham.
Kootenai Electric delegates to
the Idaho Cooperative Utilities Association Youth Rally received scholarships after the week-long rally at Schweitzer Mountain. The students, their schools and the scholarship amounts were:
Feather Beeks and Kathy Moore, Lake City High School, $500 each; winning $250 each: Jennifer Hayes, Gonzaga Prep; Joni Miller and Kim Pearson, both of Coeur d’Alene High School; Hilary Soltman, Lakeland High School; and Lindsay Taggart, Lake City High School.
Mandy White, of Lakeland High, was the top-scoring delegate based on personal interviews and her written essay, “Environmental Impact: What is the Price of Power.”
In addition, Pearson was elected director of the 1996 Youth Rally, and Moore will represent Kootenai Electric next summer at the National Youth Rally in Washington, D.C.
