What’s the aggregate distance fortysomething Inland Northwest men’s hairlines advance in one day?

Ridiculous Moments in History Photo Caption Contest: Remember the 1946 picture of the happy people (including the woman in the outlandish hat) cutting the cake shaped like an atomic-bomb blast? We received 67 entries suggesting what the photographer might have been saying. Many were good. But we are declaring Veradale’s Sandra K. Jackson the winner. Her caption: “Oh, swell. First the head, now the cake. What’s gonna blow next?” Her prize? She gets to be the judge the next time The Slice has a contest.

Honorable mentions go to Deer Park’s Warren Johnson, Coeur d’Alene’s Bob Ehrlich and Spokane’s Barbara Wodynski.

Reality check: A reader whose initials are T.P. sent us a postcard showing part of downtown. She wrote: “In response to the vacation postcards, here’s mine. This is where I spent my vacation. I spent it here because I don’t get paid enough to take a real vacation. (It’s a good thing I like Spokane.) I work here in the U.S. Bank Building. You can see us in this picture - the tiny row of lights at the top of the building on the left. Does that say anything more about WHERE I spent my vacation?”

Smile, it’s Monday:

Q: “What skills get people promoted?”

A: “Not counting sucking up?” - from an interview with “Dilbert” cartoonist Scott Adams in The Wall Street Journal

Name that tune: “We have an old pump organ in our cabin on Lake Chelan,” wrote Spokane’s Shirley Corbit. “I was holding my 4-year-old grandson Willie with one arm and picking out tunes with the other. I had just started ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ when Willie, all excited, exclaimed ‘Grandma, that’s the baseball song!”’

Kerri York wants to see: A ranking of the spiffiest and sorriest drive-through espresso stands.

And no mascara: Worley, Idaho’s Lorna Stevenson has a 5-year-old grandson who balked at attending a make-up session for a class he was taking, until he was assured it would not require wearing lipstick.

Today’s Slice question: Which Spokane area park comes closest to needing full-time security guards?
