Amateur Women Tie Pro In Pro-Ladies Golf Event

The only woman pro in the field had to share top billing with a couple of amateurs in the Washington Trust Bank Pro-Ladies golf tournament Monday at Avondale at Hayden Lake.

Susi Stone of Spokane Country Club and Kathy Cunningham, playing out of Rohde’s Golf Studio, had 7-over-par 81s to match the score of Stephanie Davis of Hayden Lake.

Stone shot 40-41, Cunningham 39-42 and Davis 41-40.

In the men’s competition, pros Randy Buckenberger of Twin Lakes Village (34-35) and Chris Mitchell of Sun Dance (32-27) were 3-under the men’s par of 72 with 69s to share first place.

Tied in second were Dan Porter of Downriver (36-34) and Mark Rohde of Rohde’s Golf Studio (34-36) with 70s.

Larry Becker of Wandermere led the senior pros with a 36-36-72.

The women’s net division leads were shared.

Mira Muirhead of Lewiston (89-17) and Betty Gano of Colville (91-19) tied for low honors in the 0-19 handicap group with 72s.

Leaders in the 20-and-up division had their scores adjusted to 68s, 5 shots under the course rating. Beryl Grant of Grangeville came in at 84-21 for 63, Cheryl Johnson of Chewelah shot 99-34 for 65 and Vicki Camp of The Creek at Qualchan was at 100-33 for 67.

Bud Drake put together the winning team from Grangeville for a 118. The women were Lois Geary, Grant and Ella Mae Holes.

The rescheduled University of Idaho Pro-Am will be Aug. 28.

Robert Gray of Esmeralda led 10 area entries in the Pacific Northwest Section of the PGA Assistants’ Championship.

Gray shot a 73, five shots back of a trio of leaders.

Three others were at 75 - David Christensen of Indian Canyon, Chris Johnston of Painted Hills and Michael Rorholm of Manito.

The St. John Golf Course, a highly regarded six-hole gem in Whitman County, adds three new holes to its layout today.

Greens superintendent Curt White said the greens and fairways on the new addition are “really looking good.”

The price to play the course remains the same, $10 for all day.

Baseball

The first 16-18-year-old Babe Ruth World Series ever held outside the United States will be in Trail, British Columbia, Saturday through Aug. 26.

Jim Wasem, baseball coach at Rogers High School in Spokane, the last two years, coaches the Trail Babe Ruth entry.

Football

Defensive tackle Leon Bender, missing the first two days the Washington State football team got together to be with his ailing father, is back on campus and is expected to take part in two-a-day drills today.

The 6-foot-5, 265 pound junior, projected to be a starter on the defensive line, was with his father, who apparently suffered a stroke, Cougars officials said. Bender missed photo day and the first day of practice.

With his father recovering and doing fine, Bender returned to Pullman on Monday.

Although he’ll be in practice, Bender’s elibility status is still unknown, pending the posting of final grades from summer school.
