Mead’s Britney Holt In The Hunt

Mead High School golfer Britney Holt is eight strokes off the pace after the first round of the American Junior Golf Association’s Ashworth-Golfweek Aviara tournament at Carlsbad, Calif.

Holt shot 41-41-82 Tuesday on the par-72 course. Nicole Dalkas of Palm Desert, Calif., shot a 74 for a two-stroke lead.

Michael Rorholm of Manito tied for the day’s second-best round to climb into a tie for 16th as the Pacific Northwest Section PGA Assistant’s Tournament wound up.

Rorholm shot a 69 for a 36-hole total of 144, seven shots back of leaders Todd O’Neal of Royal Oaks and Ross Erickson of Loomis Trail.

O’Neal birdied the first playoff hole to win $1,500 and a spot in the PGA Assistants national tourney.

David Christensen, Indian Canyon, shot 75-72-147 to win $148 and Chris Johnston, Painted Hills, was 75-74-149 to earn $120.

Basketball

Duane Ward will return for a third stint as a basketball coach at Sandpoint High School, this time with the girls team.

Ward, 52, replaces Ron Hunt, who resigned last season because of health reasons.

Ward had two previous assignments as head boys coach, most recently from 1986-91.

He takes over a girls program that is 44-24 the past three years with a trip to state two years ago. The Bulldogs were 15-7 last season.
