Indians Request Extension On Application

The Spokane Indians announced Thursday that they have requested a 13-day extension while determining whether to file a formal Triple-A application.

The Indians wish to wait until Jan. 15 before filing the necessary paper work and a $15,000, non-refundable application fee with the Triple-A expansion committee.

In early November, Spokane was among a group of 10-12 cities to make a short list for two Triple-A teams that will begin play in 1998.

The Indians set a goal of selling 2,500 season tickets and another 1,500 miniplans. Through Tuesday, the Indians had sold 200 season tickets and 90 miniplans.

“We are confident the extension will be granted,” said Indians general manager Andy Billig. “An extension in the application deadline gives us much greater flexibility as we evaluate whether to proceed with our pursuit of a Triple-A expansion team.”

For ticket information, call 535-2922.

Spokane is a member of the Northwest League, which plays a Class A short-season schedule.

Boise, one of Spokane’s NWL neighbors, has the best front-office staff in the minor leagues, according to an article that will appear in the Dec. 11-24 issue of “Baseball America.”
