Shane’s Big Win Leads Nic Over Lassen 27-17

Ben Shane’s upset win at 134 pounds Thursday sparked second-ranked North Idaho College to a 27-17 dual wrestling win over top-ranked Lassen (Calif.) College in Las Vegas.

NIC (3-0 in duals) trailed the defending national junior college champions 7-0 when Shane surprised Tim Stringer 15-7.

The Cardinals then won the next four matches, including a forfeit for Bob Presta at 142 and Josh Morton’s first-round pin of Jason Buck at 150.

“We’re certainly going to savor the win and enjoy, but we need to put it in perspective,” said NIC coach John Owen.

The Cardinals will stay in town and compete at this weekend’s Las Vegas Invitational.

Brianne Jolley had 23 points, 14 rebounds and six steals as the host Eagles toppled the defending Idaho State A-1 champion Timberwolves at Nine Mile.

Carrie Waddel also had six steals for Lakeside, which pressed the entire game. Lindsay Herbert, who hit two late free throws before the Eagles ran out the clock, led fourth-ranked Lake City (4-3) with 15 points.
