Vandal Women Pick Up First Win Of Season
Senior Mindy Rice had a game high 26 points and 17 rebounds and the Idaho Vandal women’s basketball team picked up its first win of the season 91-79 over NAIA opponent Lewis-Clark State.
Ari Skorpik and Kelli Johnson chipped in with 21 and 20 points, respectively.
Rice went into the locker room at halftime with 20 points and 16 rebounds only to find the Warriors double-teaming her in the second half.
The Vandals began to hit from outside as Johnson was 8 of 9 from the field and 4 of 5 from 3-point territory to finish with 20 points and a game high nine assists.
“It helps when you pass the ball inside,” said Idaho coach Julie Holt. “We did a much better job of passing the ball inside than we did against Gonzaga Tuesday.”
The Vandals shot 63 percent from the field and 67 percent from beyond the 3-point line (4-6) compared to Lewis Clark State’s .484.
The Warriors’ Rosie Albert had a team high 24 points and senior center Darlene Nyhoff finished with 20 points and nine rebounds. Lewis-Clark State, which had beaten the Vandals in the previous two meetings, is 5-2.
“We beat a very good team tonight,” said Holt. “They are very well coached and they were 5-1 coming into tonight so I’m very happy with our performance.”
The Memorial Gym attendance was announced at 472.
Idaho will travel to Sacramento State on Sunday before returning home to host the Idaho Tournament, Dec. 8-9.
