Erickson, Hyett Give WSU Win

Washington State forward Kristin Erickson shot a torrid 10 for 16 from the floor and scored 26 points while grabbing 10 rebounds as the Cougars demolished Southeast Missouri 89-50 Friday night at Friel Court in the first round of the Dial Classic.

The win evened the Cougars’ basketball record at 2-2 and the Otahkians fell to 1-2.

Last week the Cougars lost starting center Amy Saneholtz to a season-ending knee injury. Erickson played in the low post as well as on the wing.

Setting the tone for the Cougars early in the game was defensive pressure applied by WSU freshman Jade Hyett, who recorded six steals in the first half.

The Cougars went on a 20-0 run in an 8-minute span as they jumped to a 28-6 lead.

WSU outrebounded its opponent 43-36 and shot 35 for 64 (55 percent) from the floor.

“When we beat a few Pac-10 teams and knock off a Top 20 team, that’s when I’ll breath a sigh of relief,” Cougars coach Harold Rhodes said.

Before the game, Rhodes presented the Cougars with a Japanese proverb: “I am great because you are great, we are great because I am great.”

Now whether WSU understood the eliptical aphorism, only the team could answer that. But the Cougars responded to force the Otahkians to commit 27 turnovers and allowed them to hit just 20 of 66 shots.

Also for WSU, Jenni Ruff finished with 19 points; Julie Wight had 13 and Yvonne Kunze had 11. Ten Cougars scored in the contest.

WSU plays Oral Roberts tonight at 8.
