Hawkins Pulls Away Late To Win Foot Locker Regional
Isaac Hawkins added to his fall haul Saturday afternoon.
The Ferris junior, who won the State AAA cross country championship a month ago, won the prestigious Foot Locker Cross Country Championships West Regional by pulling away in the final mile.
Hawkins ran the 5,000-meter course at Woodward Park in Fresno, Calif., in 15 minutes, 4 seconds - 12 seconds ahead of Jeffrey Hopkins of South Jordan, Utah, and 13 seconds in front of Billy Herman of Boise.
The Washington boys finished second in the team race behind California.
Julia Stamps of Santa Rosa, Calif., defended her title and cut her course record to 16:44.6. She was well in front of Kim Mortensen of Thousand Oaks, Calif., who was second in 17:12.
Jennifer Smith of Ferris was 12th in 17:35.
The top eight in each race will represent the West at nationals next Saturday.
The Lilac Bloomsday Association sponsored 30 area runners in the race but Hawkins was the only top-10 finisher.
The finals races and regional highlights will be featured on ESPN’s Scholastic Sports America on Dec. 18 at 12:30 p.m.
