Osu Earns First Victory For Payne

Walk-on freshman Jeff Riggs scored four points in the final 1:23 Saturday as Oregon State held on to beat Cal-Irvine 64-57 to give the Beavers their first victory under new coach Eddie Payne at Corvallis, Ore.

Markee Brown, a junior college transfer, scored 11 of his 17 in the first half as the Beavers (1-2) took a 34-27 lead. The Anteaters (2-1) rallied to cut the lead to 57-56 on Shaun Battle’s layup with 2:59 to play, but the visitors never could catch the Beavers.

At Portland, Kweemada King scored 19 points and Greg Klosterman added 17 to lead the Pilots (3-0) to a win over the Lutes (1-2).

At Los Angeles, Ime Oduok scored 14 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the Lions (3-1) to a win over the Rebels (1-1).

At San Diego, Brock Jacobsen scored 16 points off the bench, including two free throws with 2 seconds remaining, as the Toreros (3-1) defeated the Aztecs (2-1).

Pepperdine 69, Ga. Southern 59

At Lincoln, Neb., forwards Bryan Hill and Wil Weir scored 19 points each as the Tigers (2-2) used a 19-4 run early in the second half to down the Eagles (0-3) in the consolation game of the Ameritas Classic.

At Moraga, Calif., David Sivulich sank two 3-pointers during a lengthy second-half run to help the Gaels (3-0) seal a victory over the Tigers (1-1).

Maine 62, Boise St. 45

At Fresno, Calif., the Black Bears (1-1) got 12 points each from Casey Arena and John Gordon to clinch third place over the Broncos (0-3) in the Fresno State Classic.

Idaho St. 89, Tenn.-Martin 72

At Springfield, Mo., Nate Green scored 19 points to lead five players in double figures for the Bengals in a win over Tennessee-Martin in the Pizza Hut Classic.

Idaho State (2-1) broke open a close game early with a 16-2 run midway through the first half for a 28-13 lead with 7:10 left. Idaho State shot 58 percent from the field in the first half and led 50-28 at halftime.

E. Michigan 95, Montana St. 71

At Ypsilanti, Mich., Earl Boykins had 23 points, Brian Tolbert had 22 and the Eagles (3-0) forced 31 turnovers by the Bobcats (3-1) for a victory.

Montana State guard Mike Elliott had 11 turnovers and only three assists and Quadre Lollis, who leads the Bobcats in scoring with a 20.7 points per game average, was held to 12.

Montana 92, Fairfield 62

At Missoula, Mont., Brent Smith led five players in double figures with 23 points in the Grizzlies’ win over Fairfield in the championship of the Missoulian Coca-Cola Classic.

The score was tied at 31 at halftime.

Montana (5-0) used an 11-0 run to take a 50-35 lead with 12:55 remaining and shot 63 percent from the field in the second half to double that margin.

Fairfield (3-1) was led by Shane Miller with 21 points.

In the third-place game, Western Illinois defeated Cal Poly-SLO 69-64.

Texas-Arlington 88, NAU 77

At Arlington, Texas, Dion Harper scored a career-high 21 points as the Mavericks rode a hot first half to an victory over the Lumberjacks.

Brian Myers scored 10 points in the game’s first 8 minutes as UTA (2-2) bolted to a 53-28 lead by halftime on 70 percent shooting.

The Lumberjacks (1-2) returned fire after intermission, going on a 38-15 rampage in the first 13:30 of the second half to close the Mavericks’ lead to 68-66.

Weber St. 66, Colorado St. 58:

At Fort Collins, Colo., Alex Fisher scored 19 points and led a 21-4 run early in the second half to lead the Wildcats (3-1) to a victory over the Rams (3-1).
