Rainer Pumps In 29 As Nic Wins Easily
College women
It didn’t surprise North Idaho College women’s basketball coach Greg Crimp that forward Shawna Rainer made 13 field goals on Saturday. It was Rainer’s eight misses that slightly confused him.
“She’s shooting so well, I expect everything she shoots to go in,” a smiling Crimp said after watching Rainer score 29 points in the Cardinals’ 73-50 stomping of Big Bend at Christianson Gym.
Rainer has been on a scoring spree much of the season as NIC has run its record to 8-0.
That unbeaten mark isn’t a surprise to Crimp, either.
“I have great expectations for this group. We have some talent,” said Crimp, whose team was 11-17 last year. “This game did, though, expose some things we need to work on.”
Those things would be rebounding - though NIC won the boards 45-42 - half-court offense and handling full-court pressure. The Cardinals committed many of their 23 turnovers against Big Bend’s pressure defense, making for a sloppy final 10 minutes.
Aundie Howerton had 10 points, and Tanya Kirk added nine points, 10 boards and three blocked shots.
Big Bend was led by the 14 points each of Post Falls High grad Melissa Glaser and Chrystal Pakootas, who had considered transferring to NIC prior to the season.
The Cardinals entertain Columbia Basin on Tuesday before opening conference play on the road against Utah Valley on Friday and Salt Lake on Saturday.

WSU 84, Oral Roberts 54
Washington St. made the title game of the Dial Classic a showcase for Jenni Ruff, Julie Wight and Jade Hyett.
The Cougars demolished Oral Roberts University on Friel Court 84-54.
Wight, a junior forward, made five 3-point baskets. She had six for the tournament, one short of the record set in 1992. Hyett, a freshman guard from Australia, who ignited WSU’s opening round game Friday with six steals, picked the Golden Eagle guards for seven more.
ORU stubbornly remained in a 2-3 zone defense as Wight rained down 3-pointers. She was 5-5 from the beyond the arc.
The Cougars improved to 3-2 with the win. ORU suffered its first loss and is now 3-1.
