Santa’s Gift Workshop Will Keep Kids Busy With Projects

Betsy Carosella The Spokesman-R

At what is undoubtedly one of the busiest times of the year for parents, wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a few hours to shop, or bake, or even read a good book without “help” from the children?

Camp Fire Boys and Girls is offering parents six hours of freedom to use as they wish while their children make holiday decorations and gifts, play games and have fun - all with someone else supervising them.

Santa’s Gift Workshop for children in kindergarten through the sixth grade will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9 and 16.

On Dec. 9, workshops will be at Camp Dart-Lo in North Spokane, Jenifer Jr. High in Lewiston, and at the University City Mall in the Valley.

On Dec. 16, the sites will be at Camp Dart-Lo, the YWCA in downtown Spokane, Palouse Empire Mall in Moscow, and the Liberty Building in Coeur d’Alene.

Children should dress warmly and bring a mug for hot chocolate. A hot lunch and snacks will be provided.

Cost is $13 for the first child in a family, and $10 for each additional child. Registration forms are available through the Camp Fire office: 747-6191 or (800) 386-2324.

Candlelight concert

For 108 years, Gonzaga University has staged a Candlelight Christmas Concert.

This year, the 109th annual concert will be at 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday, in St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church on GU’s campus.

Through narrative and music, the choir will recreate the wonder and warmth of the Christmas story, singing pieces that range from medieval processional music, to familiar English, American and French carols.

The choir will perform a capella works as well as pieces that use hand bells, harp, brass, percussion and the pipe organ.

Assisting the choir will be members of the Gonzaga Wind Ensemble, directed by Robert Spittal; members of the Gonzaga Symphony, directed by Kevin Hekmatpanah; and the Handbell Choir from the Spokane Valley United Methodist Church, directed by David Johnson.

General admission tickets are $8.50 in advance, or $12 at the door; $6.50 for advance senior citizen and student tickets, or $10 at the door. Tickets are available at all G&B Ticket outlets.

For more information, call Christine Hurst at 328-4220, ext. 3333.

Final column next week

It would seem that Lori Olsen and I are running on parallel paths. Olsen, who co-authored this column with me for several years, recently resigned her position to pursue new responsibilities. Now, I, too, have come to the conclusion that it is time for me to stop writing this column.

My article about Christmas Tree Elegance next week will be my last regular column.

One of the greatest things about the past six-plus years has been learning about our community, especially its volunteer sector. We are lucky to live where so many different people work together to improve the quality of life for the whole community.

Please continue to support the efforts of non-profit groups - their work is invaluable and they are dependent upon you.

My best wishes to all this holiday season and for the New Year.
