Women’s World Cup Canceled

Compiled From Wire Services

Warwara Zelenskaja’s smile of victory turned into tears of frustration when the women’s World Cup downhill race she believed she had won was canceled at Lake Louise, Alberta.

The young Russian, who has finished second four times but has never won a World Cup race in her seven-year career, had the fastest time of 1 minute, 26.40 seconds after 29 racers.

A sudden snow squall reduced visibility to zero and forced a 70-minute delay. Even after the snow stopped and bright sunshine bathed the mountain, officials decided to cancel the race and reschedule it for today.

Hilary Lindh of Juneau, Alaska, had the day’s second fastest time of 1:26.46.

Norway’s Lasse Kjus shed his bridesmaid label, ending a string of runnerup finishes by posting the first race victory of his seven-year World Cup career in a men’s super-G with a time of 1 minute, 34.15 seconds.

The top American was Kyle Rasmussen of Angels Camp, Calif., 14th at 1:35.23.
