Delegates From Around Globe In Town For Mining Convention

Compiled By Business Staff

More than 3,000 mining industry workers and officials today will open the 101st Convention of the Northwest Mining Association at the Spokane Convention Center.

Spokane’s largest annual meeting will include delegates from as far away as South Africa, Europe and China, said Tim Olson, executive director of the Spokane-based association. The convention’s international flavor reflects the growing amount of mining exploration done overseas.

Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, and Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., will speak Tuesday. Craig helped write the mining reforms contained in the budget package under debate in Congress.

The convention continues through Friday.
