Riverside’s Kemp Selected Cross Country Coach Of Year

Bill Kemp, whose Riverside teams have been in 27 state meets during his 16 years as coach, was named state cross country coach of the year for the 1994 season.

It was the first such honor for a coach who has 12 top-four-finishing trophies, including a boys and girls team title, during his career.

“One of my jokes is that this is the first year none of my teams goes to state and here I get coach of the year because I let others in,” said Kemp, whose teams moved up to AA this season. “Seriously, I’m highly flattered. I gave the award to the kids.”

The North Central graduate never ran cross country, but wrote about it for the school newspaper.

When he began teaching at Riverside, the school needed a coach and he volunteered.

“My wife was at Ferris and Herm Caviness took me under his wing,” said Kemp. “He got me going. I give him credit for everything I’ve done.”
