Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf scored an NBA-season-high 51 points, making nine 3-pointers, and the Denver Rockets held on to beat the Utah Jazz Thursday night in Salt Lake City after nearly losing a 22-point fourth-quarter lead.
Abdul-Rauf was 17 of 27, including 9 of 14 from 3-point range. He scored four points in the game’s final 28 seconds, including a 17-footer with 27.5 seconds to play that gave Denver a 119-114 lead.
Karl Malone led Utah with 27 points and 22 rebounds. John Stockton scored 21 before suffering a sprained right ankle.
