Washington State University Provost Tom George is out of the running for the top job at the University of Nebraska.

UN President L. Dennis Smith this week announced the appointment of James C. Moeser as chancellor of the Lincoln, Neb., campus.

Moeser, 56, has been vice president for academic affairs and provost at the University of South Carolina since 1992. He will be paid $158,000 a year at Nebraska, a 24,000-student campus and home of the top-ranked Cornhuskers football team.

The 48-year-old George, who earns $140,022 as WSU’s chief academic officer and second-highest administrator, was one of three finalists for the Nebraska position.

George said he has been approached by other schools in recent weeks but said he is “not aggressively out there” looking for another job.

“I didn’t come here with a notion that I’m going to look around,” he said.

George arrived at WSU five years ago from State University of New York in Buffalo, where he was dean of natural sciences and mathematics.
