NHL

Pat Verbeek scored a power-play goal 27 seconds into overtime as the New York Rangers wasted a third-period lead for the first time this season and then rallied to beat the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 Friday night.

New York had successfully held 14 third-period leads before Friday night’s game.

Ray Ferraro had scored in the first period and Mike Richter, playing another strong game, made the 1-0 lead stand up until Greg Johnson scored at 11:02 of the third.

The Rangers extended their home-ice unbeaten streak to 12 (10-0-2) and stopped Detroit’s six-game winning streak.
