Few Haitians Bother To Go To The Polls
The apathy that marked Haiti’s presidential campaign carried over to election day on Sunday as Haitians reluctantly chose a successor to their popular president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
Voting ended peacefully at 6 p.m., with no major disruptions reported. Independent election monitors estimated turnout in the capital at between 10 and 30 percent - compared to a near-100 percent turnout in the 1990 elections won by Aristide.
At stake is the first peaceful transition of power from one elected leader to another since independence in 1804.
Official results weren’t expected until Dec. 27.
