Mobile Home ‘Totaled’ By Fire

From Staff And Wire Reports

A fire sparked by ashes from a wood-burning stove destroyed a Pleasant Prairie mobile home Sunday.

Homeowner David Singleton fought the fire himself for more than an hour before calling firefighters, said Skip Wells, deputy chief of Fire District 9.

“The result is that we have a totaled mobile home,” Wells said.

Singleton removed ashes from the stove about 2:30 p.m. and threw them in a garbage can next to the mobile home, Wells said.

He returned home from shopping just before 5 p.m. to a small fire. He fought the fire himself, then finally called firefighters after 6 p.m., Wells said.

After firefighters arrived, the fire was brought under control in about 15 minutes.

Smoke and flames caused heavy damage in the living room and burned through the home’s walls. All of the contents were destroyed by the fire or smoke, Wells said. The damage is estimated at $6,800.

Singleton had no insurance. Red Cross is trying to find temporary living arrangements for him and his wife, Wells said.
