The Slice Complicated Theology Is Simplified

Maybe this could be called a case of biblical errancy.

When Hayden’s Chuck Schmidt was 4, his Sunday school teacher asked him to name Jesus’ parents. “Virg and Mary,” he answered.

The best thing Libby, Montana’s Dorothy Steiner has seen at a Christmas pageant: “To start things off, some kid shouted ‘Hark!’ and he looked down the church aisle,” she wrote. “There came Mary wrapped in a sheet and Joseph in a bathrobe, leading a ‘donkey.’ The donkey wore a brown one-piece outfit with a short tail in the back. That tail was worrisome, and the little boy kept reaching back there to check on it.”

Shocking decency outbreak continues: A reader named Wendy unwittingly left a diamond bracelet in the locker room of a North Side health club. By the time she realized it was missing she figured it was gone for good. Wrong. Someone who didn’t leave a name turned it in. “Thank you,” said Wendy. “My husband would have killed me.”

Sometimes readers make us smile: Remember that item about couples arguing over control of a car’s temperature setting? Well, the good folks at Becker Buick North sent us a gorgeous guidebook all about the 1996 Buicks. It came with a note: “You will be comforted to know that Buick has offered dual zone airconditioning for several years. No need to fight and argue over the ‘heater knob’ when driving a quality built, American made Buick.”

Just like new: One of our favorite parts of the newspaper is the classifieds category in which people sell used exercise equipment. An ad from last week started this way: “WAS GOING TO WORK OUT! Lasted a week.”

Slice answer: Our reader-requested question about where to find a good piano bar in Spokane prompted notes from several disappointed patrons of the one at the downtown Red Lion (formerly the Sheraton). It’s being phased out, they reported.

Others touted the Peking Palace in the Spokane Valley.

But one caller responded to that question with another, more existential query. “Is there such a thing as a good piano bar?”

Today’s Slice question: What’s the best smell in Spokane?
