Ruff Leads WSU To Tourney Title

Jenni Ruff scored 36 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to capture most valuable player honors in leading Washington State past host Houston 86-72 in the championship game of the Hobby Hilton Lady Cougar Classic Saturday night at Hofheinz Pavilion.

The win was the sixth straight for WSU (8-2). Julie Wight added 22 points for WSU and Kristin Erickson chipped in with 17. Wight and guard Jade Hyett, who had six assists and six steals, were both named to the tournament all-star team.

Houston (6-5) was led by Pat Luckey’s 33 points, while Jennifer Jones added 16 and Rosheda Hopson contributed 12. Jones and Hopson collected 11 and 12 rebounds, respectively.

WSU’s Cougars return home to prepare for the opening game of the Pacific-10 Conference season Friday at UCLA.

Idaho 85, Wichita State 82

Jennifer Stone and Michelle Greenwood each hit a pair of free throws in the last 40 seconds to give the Vandals their first road win since 1993 with a victory over the Shockers at Wichita, Kan.

The win broke a 15-game road losing streak for the Vandals. Idaho’s last road victory came on Feb. 27, 1993, in a 61-60 triumph at Weber State.

Ari Skorpik had 23 points, including 5 of 5 from 3-point range. Kelli Johnson added 22 points, while Melisa McDaniel totaled 15.

Skorpik also posted career highs with seven rebounds and seven assists.

Cal State Northridge rallied from a seven-point deficit in the final 3:28 to post a non-conference win over the visiting Eagles.

CSN trailed 50-43 before closing out the game with a 15-4 run to pick up its second win of the season.

Kristy Missall scored 11 points to lead the Eagles while teammate Shana Ray grabbed nine rebounds.

Sherry Ramirez had 12 points for CSN to lead all scorers.

The Sasquatch saw a four-point lead evaporate in the final 3 minutes as they fell to the Arizona school in the Grossmont Holiday Tournament in San Diego.

CCS played most of the game without Brandi Hurlbert and Kelly Gaines. Hurlbert injured her knee early and never returned while Gaines, an all-tournament team selection, spent most of the time on the bench in foul trouble.

Gaines still tallied 13 points to lead all scorers. Teammate Annie Shepherd added 10.

Pima took the lead for good with 1 minute left on a Sasquatch turnover.

CCS finished sixth in the 16-team tournament.
