Whitworth 61, Willamette 53

The Pirates’ Jennifer Tissue is squeezably soft in name only. She plays basketball with all the style and flair of a muddy pickup truck.

She’s got the bruises from the court to prove it.

In Whitworth’s win against the Bearcats at the Pirates’ Fieldhouse, Tissue finished with 13 points. Her final basket came in a manner in which only she could do it.

With the Pirates holding a 52-44 lead with 2 minutes to play and the 30-second shot clock running down, Tissue caught a pass at the top of the key and banked in a 3-pointer with time about to expire.

That bproved to be the final nail in the Bearcats’ coffin.

With the win, Whitworth (6-2, 12-11) moved into a first-place tie with Willamette (6-2, 16-5) in the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges.

“This win was a reflection of how we practiced all week long,” Tissue said. “After losing to Pacific Lutheran last week, we just bounced back and worked really hard.”

After trailing 30-29 at halftime, the Pirates tightened the defensive screws on Willamette and held it to 27-percent shooting from the field the second half.

“We shut down their inside game and kept them off the offensive boards in the second half,” said Pirates head coach Helen Higgs.

The teams came out firing at one another like two first-place teams should.

Whitworth center Sherri Northington scored points inside while Annette Sweeney and Tissue converted outside. The trio finished with 18, 13 and 13 points, respectively. Northington also finished with 12 rebounds.

The Pirates play at home tonight against Linfield.
