Lake City Starts Slow, But Edges Scrappy Bonners
Idaho preps
Free throws were the only adjustment Lake City talked about at halftime of Tuesday night’s non-league boys’ basketball game with Bonners Ferry.
“There was nothing else to adjust,” said junior forward Scott Hoover following the Timberwolves’ 55-50 victory.
Lake City connected on just 1 of 6 free throws in the first half, including missing the front ends of four oneand-one situations.
Thanks to the inside-outside offense of senior post Brian Russell and Hoover, who combined for 17 points, Lake City forged a slim 25-22 halftime lead.
Timberwolves coach Jim Winger picked up a technical foul as the teams left the court at the break and Bonners Ferry guard Kris Gravelle shot two free throws to start the third quarter.
Gravelle hit the second attempt, and teammate Gavin Glindeman scored uncontested underneath 20 seconds later to deadlock the game at 25.
The lead bounced back and forth for much of the third quarter, until Russell kicked the ball out to Kyle Miller for a 3-pointer at 2:39 to make it 36-33, and the Timberwolves never trailed again.
Russell’s inside basket with 10 seconds to go in the third period stretched the Lake City lead to 42-37.
Twice in the next 4 minutes, the Badgers closed to within one point, including at 4:18 off Gravelle’s baseline trey.
Russell answered at the low post, then deflected the ball into Hoover’s hands who took it the length of the floor.
Hoover missed the lefthanded layin, but yanked the ball away from Jesse Holeski and converted the offensive rebound, drawing a foul on the way. Hoover’s free throw left Lake City up 52-46 with 3:06 remaining.
The Timberwolves spread their offense, and Kelly sealed the win with three free throws in the last 1:03.
Russell tallied 17 points and eight rebounds. Hoover added 16 points. Miller grabbed nine rebounds, as Lake City outboarded the Badgers 38-30.
Gravelle led Bonners Ferry with 17 points and seven assists. Glindeman struggled offensively in the first half, but finished with 14 points, 11 coming in the second half.
“They’re first in the Intermountain League, and we knew they were going to come out physical,” Hoover said of the Badgers (14-4 overall). “They were crawling all over. I had trouble grabbing the ball myself.”
Bonners Ferry, ranked No. 2 among A-2 teams, impressed Winger, as well.
“Oh boy, I think the A-2 in our local area are going to be wellrepresented at state,” Winger said.
Lake City (5-2, 12-7) returns to Inland Empire League play Friday at Lewiston (4-2, 11-6).
The Badgers travel to Lakeland (1-5, 3-11) on Friday for an IML game.
