Glasses Sexy Accessories, Spec Makers Say

Don’t fret, four-eyes. Plenty of passes should still be tossed your way.

Despite Dorothy Parker’s oft-repeated warning about girls who wear glasses missing out on male attention, there are lots of scoring opportunities for bespectacled singles of both sexes, according to the Pearle Vision EyeStyle Index.

A full 83 percent of the men surveyed, and 86 percent of women, said they would ask out someone who wore glasses.

And rather than being ashamed of their specs, both men and women with glasses said they would be likely to wear them on a first date.

“Glasses have become synonymous with sex appeal, power and status,” insists a spokesperson for Pearle. “They could very well be the sex symbol of the ‘90s.”

Ooh, baby - bifocals. No, no, keep them on…

Gentlemen, start your engines

But nothing melts a man’s heart like a good outboard motor.

Sixty-four percent of male boat owners surveyed by Outboard Marine Corp., maker of Johnson and Evinrude motors, said they would rather have a free motor than a dinner with swimsuit model Kathy Ireland.

“Drawing from personal experience on how fun boating is, I’m not surprised more people chose the long-term benefits of having a Johnson and Evinrude outboard than having dinner with me,” said Ireland (who just happens to do advertising endorsements for the company).

Among the other findings: 71 percent of the men chose a free motor over dinner with model Rachel Hunter, and 73 percent picked the outboard over a date with Roseanne.

Hey, where’s Roseanne?

In honor of Valentine’s Day, Harlequin Books polled 100 newspaper lifestyle editors from across North America to get their thoughts on the most romantic men and women. The results:

Men: 1, Brad Pitt; 2 (tie), Daniel Day Lewis and Kenneth Branagh; 4, Kevin Costner; 5, Hugh Grant; 6, Liam Neeson; 7, Ralph Fiennes; 8, Mel Gibson; 9, Tom Cruise; 10, David Caruso.

Women: 1, Emma Thompson; 2, Meg Ryan; 3, Andie McDowell; 4, Michelle Pfeiffer; 5 (tie), Annette Bening and Janine Turner; 7, Helena Bonham Carter; 8, Meryl Streep; 9, Heather Locklear; 10, Whitney Houston.

Dis ‘n’ data

Stomach-turning trivia: If every piece of Valentine’s candy made by Brach’s this year was placed end to end, they would form a chain more than 71,000 miles long - nearly enough to circle the Earth three times…

Almost two in three (62 percent) of men say they love the women in their lives more than their cars, Firestone found. But 41 percent of women are convinced that the cars take top billing…

Close to two-thirds (64 percent) of the women who answered a Glamour magazine survey said they slept with someone based on a lie. The most common falsehoods: “I love you” (reported by 88 percent); “I’m not seeing anyone else” (58 percent) and “I’m disease-free” (28 percent)…

Finally, the Census Bureau reports that in the 25-to29 age group, there are 127 single men for every 100 unmarried women. Suppose there’s a reason for that?
