EV Girls, Wv Boys Win Spirited Frontier Games

Joe Everson Correspondent

Somewhere amid the painted bodies, pounding music and unbridled enthusiasm at East Valley High School Friday night, they managed to work in a little basketball.

And shortly after the East Valley girls claimed a 65-56 Frontier League victory with a huge fourth quarter, the West Valley Eagles flew from the opening tip to an 85-63 win in the boys contest.

It was the Frontier salute to spirit known as the Golden Throne game, a battle for a gilded toilet and bragging rights to the school demonstrating the noisiest, most positive support for its team.

East Valley won that prize, but West Valley’s Frontier champion Eagles (9-1, 17-3) broke to a 15-2 lead in the first 3 minutes, hit eight 3-pointers in the first half and never led by fewer than 17 in the second.

The loss finished a winless first season (0-10, 0-20) for East Valley coach Richard King, but King coached like a guy who expects better things ahead.

“This whole season has been a learning process,” he said as the victorious Eagles cut down the nets in celebration of their fifth league championship under coach Joe Feist.”Those are qualities you don’t see as much as you should anymore, but there are 12 guys at East Valley who understand those things. They never gave up.”

The Knights closed to 20-14, but were outmanned by the swift, sharpshooting Eagles, who were led by guard David Schillinger, who scored 24 points and hit five 3s.

Sabron Stone added 13 points for WV, Joe Bonner had 11 and Brian Lindley 10, all in the first half. Schillinger scored 16 in the first two periods. EV’s Aaron Wilkinson had 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Cory Huston - who dislocated a pinkie finger in the first 2 minutes of the game - also scored 11.

“We played very well early,” said Feist, shortly before ascending the ladder to cut the last few strands, “and that’s important in an atmosphere like this.”
