Teacher Accused Of Having Sex With Students Loses State License

The state Superintendent of Public Instruction is revoking the teaching certificate of a man accused of having sexual relations with two students when he taught at Lewis and Clark High School.

Shawn Wright has 30 days to appeal the decision to the state Board of Education.

According to the proposed revocation order released Friday, Wright lacks “the good moral character and personal fitness necessary to continue to hold a Washington educational certificate.”

Attempts to reach Wright, who always has denied the charges, were unsuccessful.

The Mead School District fired Wright in July 1994 after a ninemonth investigation into charges he had sex with one student, sexually exploited another and served alcohol to minors while teaching in the Spokane School District.

He is appealing his firing in Superior Court.

Mead placed Wright on paid administrative leave in 1993 after a former LC student, Laurie Brockmann, told school officials she and Wright had a sexual relationship while she was a student.

A second student came forward during the investigation with charges Wright sexually exploited her.

Wright, LC’s former choir director, left the Spokane School District in 1987 and went to work for Mead a year later. Brockmann settled two years ago with the Spokane district’s insurance company for an amount not made public.

Wright and the district’s insurance company, CIGNA Cos., are fighting in court The SpokesmanReview’s attempt to make public the dollar amount of the settlement.
