G-Prep Wins To Set Up Showdown For Gsl Mat Lead

Gonzaga Prep put itself in position Friday to take a shot at the Greater Spokane League wrestling lead.

Cory Brannon (108 pounds) began the match with a pin and the host Bullpups (4-1) roared to a 23-3 lead in defeating Lewis and Clark 41-18.

G-Prep is in second place, on the heels of idle University (4-0). The two meet at U-Hi on Wednesday.

Rex Mangiaracina (178) had G-Prep’s other pin. For LC (0-4), heavyweight Oswaii Hill pinned Chris Borhnsen after trailing 9-3 and Jamie Firor (148) defeated Eric Hundahl 5-3 in overtime.

At Central Valley, wins at 122, 129 and 135 helped third-place Mead (3-1-1) to a 44-22 win over CV (2-2).

Lyle Beerbohm (122) earned a technical fall, Joel Edminster (129) pinned Myke Davis with the match tied at 11, and James Clark (135) defeated defending district champion Joel Gehrett 3-1. Nick Ota (115), Rick Giampietri Jr. (158) and heavyweight Bob Perkes had CV’s pins.

Fourth-place Rogers (3-1) won the final eight matches in a 54-9 win over visiting North Central (1-4).

The Pirates piled up points in the lower weights, with Randy Ramos (101) and Mike Knight (115) earning pins and James Dawe (129) picking up a major decision. NC’s Brian Largent (135) notched a pin.

At Shadle Park, the host Highlanders (1-3-1) won the first three matches during a 37-19 win over Ferris (1-3). Shadle’s Sabino Hernandez (168) won 7-6 with an escape and takedown in the third period. Cam Copher (158) and David Lavigne (190) had pins for Ferris.

U-Hi’s success is likely to inhibit its chances of winning its own tournament, the Pacific Northwest Classic, today.

U-Hi coach Don Owen plans to rest former State AAA champions Andy and Dusty Roberts.

Because U-Hi is invited to this year’s unofficial state dual meet championships at Auburn High, some of its wrestlers are in jeopardy of surpassing the 20-match limit.

Owen sees Sentinel (Missoula), defending champion Mead, Othello and Davis as the favorites at the 12-team Classic. Sentinel is coached by Owen’s brother, Mike.

Also scheduled to appear are defending Northeast A champion Lakeside, traditional Frontier League power East Valley, CV and G-Prep.

Wrestling will begin at 10 a.m. Finals are expected at 5:30 p.m.

Hockey: Chris Alves had two firstperiod goals as the Sicamous Eagles (26-3), the North Division leaders, defeated Spokane 5-3 in a Kootenay International Junior Hockey League game at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.

Darin Talotti had two secondperiod goals and added an assist for the Braves (7-16-2). Mike Brunette of Spokane also scored.
