This wasn’t the recruiting contact Texas A&M football coach R.C. Slocum was after.

Three weeks ago, while on a recruiting trip, Slocum stumbled into an armed robbery at a convenience store near College Station, Texas.

“I walk in the store, and this guy comes flying out and just about runs me over,” Slocum said Monday. “I tried to speak to him, just trying to be friendly, but he didn’t say anything back. I thought it was kind of rude.

“Then this other guy comes flying out, and it’s the same thing. I looked inside, and there was this lady behind the counter about to pass out. I looked back out, and then I saw the gun. They were getting into a car …”

Slocum phoned 911 to report the robbery, and last week helped identify two suspects in the case.

“One of them was wearing a Cowboys jersey with No. 22 on the front and ‘Smith’ on the back,” Slocum said. “But I know Emmitt Smith, and it wasn’t Emmitt.”
