Nbc Plans News Channel

NBC says it plans to begin an all-news TV channel competitor to Cable News Network in the United States within five years, despite NBC’s ongoing merger talks with CNN’s owner Turner Broadcasting Systems Inc.

Such a channel, which hasn’t moved beyond the planning stages, would be another expensive entry in the crowded TV news channel sweepstakes that CNN has dominated since its 1980 startup. On Feb. 1, the BBC begins U.S. transmission of BBC World Wide in a partnership with International News Network.
