Struck By A Train, Athlete Loses Foot

Associated Press

Illinois State quarterback Michael Metzger’s right foot was amputated Monday after he was struck by a freight train.

Metzger, 19, an Indiana all-stater from Indianapolis, who played in only one game for ISU last season, was in fair condition.

One witness told police it appeared Metzger was trying to hop the Southern Pacific train. Another said Metzger was running north along the west side of the track before falling.
