Suspect Sought

A man affiliated with a California gang is wanted in Spokane on federal cocaine charges after he was accidentally released from jail Tuesday morning.

Benny Ray Smith, 27, W733 Mansfield, should have been kept in the Spokane County Jail on a federal detainer Tuesday, but he was instead released, said sheriff’s Lt. Clyde Ries.

The federal detainer accuses Smith of cocaine distribution and possession with intent to distribute cocaine.

Smith is a gang affiliate from California and has been involved in the movement of crack cocaine to Spokane, authorities said.
