Pilots Cruise Past Gaels As Sub Stars

Rick Brainard’s 18 points led the University of Portland to a 90-69 win over St. Mary’s in a West Coast Conference basketball game Thursday night as the Pilots won their sixth straight.

Brainard came off the bench and connected on all seven of his shots for Portland (3-0, 12-3). The Pilots, off to their best start since 1978, continue to share first place with Santa Clara.

Brent Farris ended with 26 points to lead the Gaels (1-3, 6-8).

Weber St. 65, Boise St. 61 Guard Ruben Nembhard drove up the middle for a layup with 6 seconds remaining to guide the Wildcats (2-1, 9-6) over the Broncos (2-1, 11-3) at Boise.

Weber State fought back from an eight-point, second-half deficit to end Boise State’s 16-game homecourt winning streak.

Boise State tied the game at 61 on a 15-foot jumper by freshman guard Josh Folsom before Nembhard hit his winning shot. Folsom attempted a 3-point shot to win the game, but Weber’s Lewis Lofton blocked it, was fouled and added two free throws to round out the scoring.
