St. Maries Man Dies As Truck Crash-Lands

From Staff And Wire Reports

A St. Maries man has died and another man was hospitalized after a pickup went over a 60-foot embankment.

The driver, Henry L. Blankenship, 71, was driving his pickup southbound on Idaho Highway 3, with passenger Lavern C. Vannatter, 61, on Thursday.

The Idaho State Police reported Blankenship lost control on the icy road as he navigated a curve, overcorrected and drove over the embankment.

The truck landed upside down in a creek, and Vannatter was partially ejected. He later died at the scene.

Blankenship was transported to Benewah County Hospital and treated for lacerations to his face and head.
