Even In Jest, Charles Can’t Get An Even Break

U.S. News & World Report owner Mort Zuckerman caused a furor recently with a column that, for apparent comic effect, invented quotes.

The problem was not so much who the quotes were supposedly from, Prince Charles, as it was what the quotes actually said. Of Princess Diana, the randy prince ostensibly commented, “She has an Italian body and a Jewish mind. Thank God it is not the other way around.”

“This is so clearly a combination of sexism and racism - anti-Jewish and woman,” said an unamused Leslie R. Wolfe, president of the Center of Women Policy Studies. “I find it horrifying that somebody in his position would write anything like this.”

The noted neo-feminist Camille Paglia, on the other hand, merely laughed. “I’m a great proponent of offensive speech,” she said.

Loose talk

Kevin Costner on the fortunes of fate: “It’s living a life, and I’m living one, and that means all the good and bad that goes with the life. That doesn’t mean you don’t hurt and your heart’s not on the ground. But you’re a professional and you have to focus. You have to.”

To this day, she won’t eat pea soup

Linda Blair turns 36 today.

He indulges in a different form of obsession

Don’t look for Mickey Rourke to take Marky Mark’s place as a Calvin Klein poseur boy anytime soon. While shooting a fashion (?) spread for Esquire magazine, Rourke revealed that he didn’t wear underwear. And if he did, he’d wear “anything but Calvin Klein.” Apparently, Rourke was ejected from a Klein fashion show last year at which Rourke’s estranged wife, model Carre Otis, was working.

Two bits of good news for Vanna White, television’s premier letterturner. One, she’s negotiated a deal with “Wheel of Fortune” to keep her employed until 1999. That’s particularly nice to know because, two, she’s pregnant with her expected second child with husband George Santo Pietro.

Those veggie diets aren’t always low-fat

It’s easier to take weight off than keep it off. Oprah Winfrey proved that. Now ask Ricki Lake. Lake, the 26-year-old talk-show host who dropped from 260 to 126 pounds, is apparently growing heavy again. She’s dressing in oversized fashion to disguise the process.

No role model, Shannen’s now a fashion model

Elite modeling agency has a new client. Shannen Doherty, she of “Beverly Hills 90210” fame. “She’s so gorgeous,” says Elite President Monique Pillard.

So that’s why they’re now featuring a harp player

Keith Richards, never the most spiritualist of beings, is so when it comes to his music. “Whenever we play outdoors, God joins the band,” Richards recently said. “Suddenly, there is this other guy in the band, and He shows up in the form of wind or rain or whatever, and we’ve got to be ready to play with him.”
