Lc Goes Three The Hard Way, Tops Cv

GSL boys

Lewis and Clark wouldn’t take any gimmes, but when the Tigers earned an opportunity they pulled out a 60-56 triple-overtime win over Central Valley Tuesday night at the Coliseum.

The Bears held the ball for last shots at the end of regulation and the first two overtimes before turning the ball over to the Tigers, who couldn’t cash in.

It wasn’t until the Tigers won the opening tip for the third overtime that they were able to gain control in the battle for a share of second place in the Greater Spokane League.

The first game between the Tigers (7-3, 10-4) and Bears (6-4, 8-6) was won by LC in overtime, 61-58.

This time, Soren Olson drove the lane for a short shot shortly after winning the tip to start the third overtime. Geoff Courchaine responded for CV a minute later, but Paul Mencke tipped in a miss for LC. CV never got a high-percentage shot after that.

“We had our chances,” CV coach Terry Irwin said. “It seemed like we just didn’t want to win. Three times when we were going for the last shot we turned the ball over.”

With the game tied at 45, LC missed a shot with 1 minutes left in regulation and the Bears held the ball before turning it over with 4 seconds left. The Tigers turned the ball over as time ran out.

Courchaine won the overtime tip and Corby Schuh drained a 3-pointer. Mencke responded with a three-point play. The teams traded baskets and CV took over with 1:02 left but had a turnover with nine seconds. Again the Tigers failed to get off a shot.

Courchaine won another tip and then scored to start the second overtime, but LC matched baskets and turnovers with the Bears before Olson fed John Kane to tie the game 54-54 with 52 seconds to play. The turnover came at 5 seconds this time, but all the Tigers could get was a hurried 3-point try from their center, Mencke, at the buzzer.

“It was tough when they scored first and they always had the ball with a minute left and the score tied. That put a lot of pressure on us defensively,” Olson said. “When we finally got the ball and went up and they had to come back, it was easier on the defense because we knew that, no matter what happened, it would only be tied. Defensively, we picked it up.”

After Jeremy Nesbitt scored twice for CV, including the first of his six 3-pointers, for a 5-2 lead, LC scored four straight times off turnovers for an 11-5 lead, the biggest of the game.

The Tigers scored 16 points off 14 CV turnovers through regulation, but the Bears stayed in the game with nine 3-pointers. The lead changed 15 times before overtime.

The Tigers stopped Nesbitt late - he had his 20 points with 3 minutes left in the third quarter, and contained Schuh, who only got three 3s.

“The one thing we didn’t do is we didn’t look inside,” Irwin said. “They kept looking at the perimeter.”

“As the seasons progress and games get more important the games seem to slow down,” LC coach Glenn Williams said. “Maybe each possession is more important. I wasn’t really worried about the score. We executed well at times, something we haven’t done consistently.”
