Spokane Stars Squander Late Lead, Lose To Ohio

The Spokane Stars lost their second game at the U-18 girls national AAU basketball tournament, falling 67-64 to Ohio in Dallas on Sunday.

Spokane, now 0-2, led by as many as five points in the second half before Ohio rallied for a 61-60 lead with 1:30 left.

Alli Nieman of Sandpoint scored 19 points to lead Spokane.

Spokane meets Iowa today at 2:30 p.m.

Texas edged Spokane 75-74 in a U-16 controversial national AAU tournament girls basketball game in Dallas.

Spokane apparently had taken a 12-9 lead early, but one of its baskets was credited to Texas, which instead led 11-10. Referees stopped the game at that point, but did not change the score after referring to the official scorebook.

Stacy Clinesmith led Spokane with 26 points.

Spokane, 0-2 in the tournament, meets Michigan at 10:30 this morning.

Baseball

Rain didn’t totally wash out the American Legion Fourth of July tournament on Sunday.

Farwest Electric (Vancouver) won twice, beating Kimmel Athletic 12-3 and M&L Construction 14-3. Both games were played at Shadle Park’s Al K. Jackson Field.

In the victory over Kimmel, Brandon Stewart, Adam Stokey, Matt Summerson and Brian King each had an RBI in Farwest’s six-run third inning. Against M&L, Shawn Driscoll pitched a complete game and helped his cause with a three-run double for the winners.

Also at Shadle, Kimmel edged Apple Valley (Wenatchee) 9-8. Robert Woodside and Justin McKitrick each had run-scoring hits in the seventh inning to lift Kimmel.

Soccer

The Spokane Shadow beat the Yakima Reds 2-0 in a USISL game in Yakima.

Rick Mullins and Doug Birdtail each scored a goal for Spokane (4-5), which hosts Salem on Saturday at Spokane Falls Community College.
