Gordon And Chevrolet Continue To Dominate Winston Cup Racing
Jeff Gordon used pit-stop strategy to join the leaders, then drove a smooth line to the top of the Winston Cup standings with an easy victory Sunday in the Slick 50 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway at Loudon, N.H. Driving a new Chevrolet Monte Carlo to its 13th victory in 16 events this year, Gordon collected $160,300 from a $1.3 million purse.
Gordon passed seven-time champion Dale Earnhardt on the 170th of 300 laps at the 1.058-mile oval, then surrendered the lead only during caution periods.
Pole-sitter Mark Martin was third in a Ford, followed by the Chevy of Terry Labonte and the Ford of last year’s winner, Ricky Rudd.
Jacques Villeneuve went virtually unchallenged en route to his second straight Texaco-Havoline 200 victory at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis.
Villeneuve averaged 103.901 miles per hour and led all but three of the 50 laps on the four-mile, 14-turn road circuit.
