Actually, the recipe comes from the restaurant that Charlotte Yergens’ family used to run in Edmonton, Alberta. The Newport, Wash.-area resident and her two young sons make it today in a small business incubator in Sandpoint.

Whatever its origins, the tangy taste is straightforward - sweet, then spicy, with a pleasantly lingering bite.

As barbecue sauces go, it’s definitely uptown.
