Calvary Lutheran Church Celebrates 40th Anniversary

This weekend will be a milestone for Calvary Lutheran Church.

The church will not only celebrate its 40th Anniversary, but will begin looking toward the end of its life, too. That’s because it will formally merge with Ascension Lutheran Church in September. That congregation has already sold its building and is worshipping with the Calvary group. But come fall, Calvary Lutheran will be no more - its congregation and Ascension’s will come together to form Prince of Peace Lutheran.

They’ll meet at the current Calvary site, 3909 W. Rowan, until a new church can be built.

It will be a big change.

That’s why this weekend’s anniversary takes on a significance greater than just a look back.

There will be plenty of ways church members can do that. On Friday, there will be a retrospective “Days Remembered” evening prayer service at 7 p.m., followed by dessert and performances by church members. On Saturday at 6 p.m., the church will have a history presentation, banquet, and a performance by a string quartet from the Spokane Symphony Orchestra. Saturday’s events will be held at the new student union building at Whitworth College.

On Sunday, the anniversary events end with a look to the future. The church’s 8:15 and 10 a.m. services will have messages focusing on the coming new church.

“One of the things we’re trying to avoid is corporate language,” Zaswig said. “This isn’t a merger. Both congregations’ identities have to die. This has to be a chance for something new.”

Ice cream social

Central Baptist Church will host an “ice cream social and hymn sing” this Sunday at 6:30 p.m. Just bring yourself, your appetite and your lungs. For more information on either event, call 327-9322.

Elbow grease wanted

St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 8112 N. Howard, will host a fun event for high school students every Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The church’s Life Teen group has a little bit of work to do next week, though. On July 19, it will have a paint party.

For more information about Life Teen activities, call the church at 466-0220.
