The Highlands To Be Exclusive Course For Spokane Club

The Highlands, a public golf course during its five-year existence, is going exclusive.

Officials said Thursday that the Spokane Club has purchased all available tee times at the Post Falls course for 1996 - turning it into a private course for Spokane Club members starting Jan. 1.

Some tee times will be made available for residents in The Highlands area, however.

“We’ve always wanted, from when we first started, to work toward going private,” said Robert Coles, president of The Highlands. “And this was an opportunity to make it all happen.”

Alan Arsenault, Spokane Club general manager, said the move should appeal to members who would otherwise be tempted to join country clubs since they will not have to pay country club initiation fees or monthly dues.

Club membership fees will not be raised, Arsenault said.

Green fees for 18 holes will be $28.50, a $6 rise from the current cost.

“We see a trend in downtown clubs (nationally) losing membership,” said Tim Fennessy, Spokane Club president. “The thing we can do to counter that trend is to offer more variety of services.”

Carnegie’s restaurant at the course will remain open to the public.
