Boxer Threatens Senate Vote On Hearings

Sen. Barbara Boxer said Friday that if the Ethics Committee fails to act by the end of next week, she would force the Senate to vote on conducting hearings in the case of Sen. Bob Packwood.

Boxer, D-Calif., previously had no time limit for her resolution for hearings on sexual and official misconduct charges against Packwood, R-Ore.

Her latest announcement came after the ethics panel chairman, Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., adjourned committee deliberations last Wednesday without setting a date for resumption.

Packwood, R-Ore., has been charged with sexual and official misconduct.

“Now I have decided to put a time factor into my promise,” she wrote. “Therefore, I plan to seek a vote on a resolution requiring public hearings, unless the … committee takes such action by the end of next week.”
