Tryba Holds Off Charge To Escape With First Pga Tournament Win

Compiled From Wire Services

Ted Tryba won for the first time on the PGA Tour, shooting a 3-under-par 68 Sunday to capture the Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic in Williamsburg, Va. by one stroke.

Tryba was tied with Jim Gallagher Jr. and Blaine McCallister when play began, just one shot off the lead. He took care of those five-time winners, then held off a last challenge by Scott Simpson.

Tryba’s 12-under 272 total over the River Course of the Kingsmill Golf Club was worth $198,000, more than twice his earnings total of $90,869 coming into the event.

Simpson’s birdie on the par-3 17th coincided with Tryba’s bogey on No. 16 to close a three-stroke gap to one shot. But the former U.S. Open winner drove into the rough on the par-4 finishing hole and his par came up shy when Tryba hit to the center of the final green and two-putted for par.

Pullman’s Kirk Triplett won $21,843, after posting a four-day total of 278.

J.C. Snead beat Jack Nicklaus on the first hole of a playoff in the Senior Players Championship in Dearborn, Mich., making a curling 4-foot birdie putt after a 5-iron approach from 182 yards.

Snead, who had a four-stroke lead with six holes to play, shot a 3-under-par 69 and Nicklaus had a 67 for 16-under 272 totals. That sent them back to the No. 18, where both players had four pars in regulation.

After both split the fairway, Nicklaus’ approach came up 30 feet short before Snead hit his splendid 5-iron to set up the winning putt.
